Unit 2 - Nature's Chemistry topics:

(i) Homologous series

(ii) Everyday Consumer Products

(iii) Energy From Fuels

(i) Homologous series

A homologous series is a group of compounds that have similar chemical properties, gradually changing physical properties and can be represented by a general formula.

The chemistry of carbon compounds is called organic chemistry.

Alkanes

The name of a compound is based on the number of carbon atoms.

Alkanes always end their name in 'ane'.

The first part of an alkane name (the prefix) tells you how many carbon atoms are in the molecule.

Prefix Number of Carbon Atoms in Molecules
meth 1
eth 2

pent 5
hex 6
