Added Value Unit

Your added value unit has two sections:

  1. A research stage, where you will investigate an issue in Chemistry and conduct a related experiment.

  2. A communication stage, where you will present your findings

Follow the steps below to complete your added value unit.

Step 1 - Choose an Investigation

We will be looking at the use of alcohols as fuels.

Step 2 - Carry out an Experiment

Conduct an experiment where alcohols are used as fuels. Make sure that you record the results of the experiment in a table.

Step 3 - Research your topic

Use your Ipad to conduct research on the use of alcohols as fuels. You must find two sources of information. Once you have found two sources, write down their full URL / web address in your notes. You will need to include this in your final report.

Step 4 - Communicating your findings

You now need to present the information that you have found about the use of alcohols as fuels in one of the following formats:

Make sure that you cover the following:

Assessment Standard Marking Assessment Judgements Mark
1.1 State clearly what you are investigating 1
1.1 Give a brief statement describing one way in which the issue is relevant to the environment and/or society. 1
1.2 Include Data/information from at least two relevant sources. One of these sources can be your experiment. 2
1.2 Record the sources (URL / full website address) of two pieces of data/information. This should allow the data/information to be retrieved by someone else. 1
1.3 One piece of data/information must be presented in a format that's different from its original source. The format chosen is appropriate for the data/information and is a table, graph diagram, flow chart or key. 1
1.3 Headings, labels and units are included in the presentation of the data/information and are correct. 1
1.3 Plot graph points accurately. 1
1.4 Two points which are relevant to the issue are explained or described using relevant chemistry. 2
1.4 At least one impact of the issue on the environment and/or society is explained or described using some relevant chemistry. 1
1.5 The findings of the investigation are summed up or a conclusion is given. 1
1.5 The findings are clearly and concisely communicated. 1
1.5 Appropriate structure is used. 1
